VENICE (The Beach)
A Musical Tragi-Comedy
by G. F. Mlely
Venice
is about the fact of homelessness and the socio-political opposition to
their presence. And the conflict therein that can result in
tragedy. Yet, there is hope in that people can change - for the
better.
The play opens during darkness before dawn. We hear a homeless
group, in silhouette - we can’t make out who they are - singing
aggressively, “The homeless are a bunch of drunks, they say; mentally
disturbed castaways..,” in a sardonic parody of their situation.
“Unable or unwilling, it’s all the same, you’re guilty if broke in the
U.S.A., and you should be so ashamed. Opportunity’s
been proclaimed...”
The song is rendered several times throughout the play, each time
commenting on a scene. This initial rendition segues into
another, much more mellow, song by another silhouetted figure standing
apart, we are still unclear as to who he might be, but who is slowly
revealed by the approaching sun to be another homeless, singing
“Is there truth, a single truth that lasts forever?..” This is
Gable.
We are in Venice, California, circa 1990, where this group of homeless
find conflict and support, laughs and grief. What happens when
you outlaw homelessness? Where do you go once you've reached the
edge of the sea? Even though "the cops and robbers will be by any
day," two still find love, if only briefly.
There is Bard, a songwriter with some small success, affording only to
live in a housetrailer that he moves from neighborhood to neighborhood;
Reb, homeless and calling for action; Cassie, tarot-card reader, not
homeless, Gable’s significant other for awhile; the popular Philo,
voluntarily homeless offering spiritual answers to life’s difficulties;
Verna, the upscale Shangri-La restaurant owner who, despite her
sympathetic feelings, protests the homeless gathering by her
business.
And others among the local property and business owners protesting
loudly against the presence of the several homeless attempting merely
to exist - somewhere, even if it is on the edge of a vast
cravasse.
Despite an imminent breakup between Gable and Cassie, caused by her
inability to accept his homelessness, and a false arrest of the group
of homeless including one almost homeless, leading to Philo's murder,
they can still sing a song in jail called "Hope." And after all
that, who wouldn't want to "Stay Out Of Hell!"
